Oklahoma Native American Ballerina Gets Barbie Doll

Maria Tallchief, an Osage ballerina from Oklahoma known as “America’s first prima ballerina,” has been honored with a Barbie doll in her likeness as part of Mattel’s Inspiring Women Series.

The doll, designed to reflect Tallchief’s iconic Firebird costume, celebrates her groundbreaking contributions to ballet and her rise to international fame. Her daughter, Elise Paschen, worked closely with Mattel to ensure the doll accurately represents her mother’s legacy.

To commemorate the Maria Tallchief Barbie doll release, the Osage Nation hosted an event on November 18, 2024, at the Constantine Theater in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. The celebration featured performances by Osage singer Scott George, Grayhorse Tail dancers, and students from Dance Maker Academy who performed Tallchief’s signature “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” from The Nutcracker.

  • Oklahoma Grown: Born in Fairfax, Oklahoma near the Tulsa Metro area, Tallchief popularized ballet in the United States and is one of the state’s most famous residents.
  • Local Recognition: “Maria Tallchief was an extraordinary person with immense talent who remained grounded in her Osage culture,” Osage Nation Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear said. “Her many accomplishments exemplify that you can achieve your dreams with hard work and determination.”
